“Life Beyond” – Mali

Mask with a human or rabbit face. The squared mouth features carved teeth painted white, representing wise speech and communion with tribal ancestors. The nose is shaped like a handle and the eyes like protruding concentric circles; both are also painted white. Two erect rabbit ears sit atop the head, and the entire mask is painted black as a symbol of power.
