“Love From Tribal Ancestors” – Gabon
Large mask/statue of the face of a beautiful woman carved into the statue’s body, whose cross-hatch creates the sense of a unified texture. The mouth is small and the ears delicately shaped; both are painted in red, symbolizing love. The nose is carefully outlined and the eyes closed. Her face is painted white, symbolizing communion with tribal ancestors, and her chiseled forehead is decorated with a pattern of diamonds of increasing sizes, also painted red for love.
