“The Bird of the Good Life” – Ivory Coast
Bird mask. The top part of the mask is shaped like the beak of a Koko bird, who according to legend bestows health, livelihood, protection, and happiness. The bottom part of the mask features six protruding eyes, three on each side of the face, which represent omnivision and power. The uppermost pair of eyes are painted blue as a symbol of well-being; the middle pair are painted white as a symbol of the connection to their ancestors, and the bottommost pair are painted red as a symbol of love.
