“The Mask of the Witch Doctor” – Congo

0

Mask/Sculpture of a witch doctor who communes with both the tribal ancestors and the gods. The square mouth extends outwards and is painted red, symbolizing words of love; the holes in the protruding eyes allow the wearer to see through them. The nose juts out from the face and connects with the crown suspended over the mask’s head. The entire mask/sculpture is painted black and white, the colors of power and communion with tribal ancestors, respectively.
