“The Shield of Livelihood” – Cameroon
Shield of the Bamileke tribe from the Cameroon grasslands. Ceremonies are a regular part of Bamileke tribal life, and feature dances for livelihood, security, and unity among tribe members. These shields serve as a popular prop in these dances: Lines engraved along the length and width of the shield symbolize unity and collaboration, itself the source of livelihood and security. The white paint symbolizes communion with tribal ancestors and the request for their protection.
