“The Symbols” – Nigeria


Multi-symbol mask. The nose, painted red for love, is shaped like a set of stairs; they lead upward to a carved figure in the center of the forehead, painted white for communion with tribal ancestors. The figure, which could be either human or animal, represents the ability to direct one’s thoughts, while the two black deer’s horns that stick up from the top of the head symbolize power.
